About This Guide

Better Ballot North Carolina (BBNC) is a statewide, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization advocating ranked choice voting (RCV), aka "instant runoff voting." BBNC believes broader use of this simple election upgrade would save taxpayer money and strengthen our democracy in positive ways.  A statewide instant runoff election in 2010 showed NC’s voting machines can accept RCV.

As a resource for North Carolina voters in the March 3, 2026 primary, BBNC asked candidates’ opinions on RCV and related topics in our state. Surveys were sent to those in competitive (2+ candidates) races at the U.S Congressional (NC only), state legislative, county commissioner, and municipal mayoral and council levels. BBNC plans to repeat this process for the November 3, 2026 general election.

The unedited responses from those candidates who chose to respond are available, below.  Candidates' statements are their own and do not represent the views of Better Ballot North Carolina. BBNC does not endorse or oppose any candidates.
